Vanha Suurtori, the Old Great Square, was for centuries the central marketplace and civic heart of Turku, Finland's former capital, close to the medieval cathedral on the bank of the Aura river. Surrounded by the old town hall and restored wooden and stone buildings, it hosts a recreated medieval market each summer with costumed traders and craft demonstrations. The Brinkkala mansion on the square is where the Christmas Peace is proclaimed each year, a tradition broadcast across the whole country.
