Stortorvet is a historic market square in central Oslo, long the city's main marketplace and still home to flower stalls beneath the surrounding buildings. The 17th-century cathedral of Oslo rises on one side, and a statue of King Christian IV, who rebuilt the city after a fire and gave it his name for centuries, stands with an outstretched arm indicating where the new town should rise. The square lies at the meeting of the main shopping street and remains a busy pedestrian crossroads.
