The Thien Hau Temple in the Cho Lon area of Ho Chi Minh City is dedicated to Mazu, the Chinese sea goddess, built in the nineteenth century by Cantonese settlers grateful for safe passage across the sea. Its roofline is celebrated for elaborate ceramic dioramas depicting scenes from Chinese legend, crafted in porcelain by artisans of the era. Enormous spiral incense coils hang overhead, dripping ash as they slowly burn, and the smoke-darkened interior holds statues of the goddess carried in an annual procession.
