This walled compound of villas, gardens and lakes in western Beijing serves as the principal state guesthouse for visiting heads of state and high-level delegations. Its grounds date back to imperial times, when the site was used as a fishing retreat by emperors, and later lodges were added around the classical landscaped waters. Numbered residences within the walls have hosted many historic diplomatic meetings. Portions of the complex operate as a hotel and event venue, allowing limited public access.
