Standing along the main axis of Santiago, this monument honors the naval hero Arturo Prat and the sailors who died at the Battle of Iquique in 1879 during the War of the Pacific. A tall column is topped by a figure of victory, while bronze reliefs and statues at the base depict Prat and his fallen crew, whose remains are interred within. Inaugurated in 1886, the monument became a focus of national naval identity, and ceremonies are held each May on the anniversary of the battle that made Prat a lasting symbol of duty.
