The seat of Chile's bicameral legislature is a large modern complex in Valparaíso, relocated from Santiago in 1990 as a deliberate decentralization of political power. Its monumental concrete-and-glass architecture contrasts with the port city's nineteenth-century heritage. The building houses the Chamber of Deputies, the Senate and their committee chambers, and hosts sessions open to the public and press. It anchors the administrative face of Valparaíso beside its historic maritime quarters.
