The oldest of Valparaíso's surviving funiculars, this hillside elevator opened in 1883 to carry residents up the steep grade between the commercial flats and the hilltop neighborhoods. Its wooden cabins climb a short, steep track, connecting the port district with the viewpoints and heritage streets above. Once dozens of such lifts served the amphitheater-shaped city; the survivors are protected monuments. Riding the creaking car up to a panoramic promenade is a quintessential experience of the port.
