Standing on Paseo de la Reforma in Mexico City, this monument honors Cuauhtémoc, the last Aztec emperor who resisted the Spanish conquest and was executed in 1525. A bronze statue of the feathered warrior in a spear-throwing stance crowns a tall pedestal decorated with pre-Hispanic motifs and reliefs showing his capture. Dedicated in 1887, it was among the first major monuments to celebrate Mexico's Indigenous heritage rather than its colonial past. The ornate base blends European monument conventions with Aztec ornament.
