This monument in the Menteng district marks the spot where Indonesian independence was proclaimed on 17 August 1945. The Proclamation Monument features statues of the two founding leaders reading the declaration, a stylised representation of the historic text, and an obelisk. Set within a landscaped park on the site of the house where the event took place, it is a focus for annual commemorations of the founding of the republic. The quiet grounds and sculptural groups make it a place of both remembrance and civic education in the capital.
