This tall obelisk in a busy Bangkok roundabout commemorates Thai soldiers who died in a brief 1941 border conflict with French Indochina. Designed in a militarised Art Deco style and completed in 1941, its central spire is ringed by five bronze figures representing the armed forces and police, their bayonets meeting at the summit. Over time the site became one of the city's principal transport hubs, encircled by bus routes and a Skytrain station.
