This obelisk rises at the centre of the Praça dos Restauradores in Lisbon, commemorating the restoration of Portuguese independence from Spanish rule in 1640. Unveiled in 1886, the tall stone pillar is crowned by a bronze allegory of Victory and flanked by figures representing Freedom and Independence. Bronze inscriptions record the key dates and battles of the revolt. The square sits at the lower end of the Avenida da Liberdade and serves as a gateway between the downtown and the avenue.
