Monument to Alfonso XII

This monumental ensemble overlooks the boating lake of the Retiro Park in Madrid, honouring King Alfonso XII. Completed in 1922, it features a sweeping semicircular colonnade embracing a tall central pillar topped by an equestrian bronze statue of the monarch. Marble and bronze figures representing peace, progress, and the arts adorn the terraces, while stone lions flank the steps down to the water. The grand curve of columns is a favourite backdrop for visitors rowing on the lake.
