This major museum near Plaza de Colón traces the history of the Iberian Peninsula from prehistory through the medieval and early modern eras. Its collections include Iberian sculpture such as the enigmatic Lady of Elche, Roman mosaics, Visigothic treasures, and Islamic artifacts. Founded in the nineteenth century, it shares a grand building with the national library. A replica of the Altamira cave paintings is displayed in the garden. The extensively renovated galleries present Spanish civilization across thousands of years.
