The National Museum of Fine Arts of Algiers is one of the largest art museums in Africa, overlooking the Jardin d'Essai in the capital. Its extensive holdings include European paintings, sculpture and prints alongside a strong collection of Algerian and Orientalist works. Galleries move from old masters to modern North African artists, reflecting the country's layered cultural history. Founded in the early twentieth century, the collection was partly dispersed and later reconstituted after independence.
