This vast Shanghai art museum occupies the inverted-pyramid China Pavilion built for the 2010 World Expo, its bold red form a landmark of the Pudong skyline. It holds a major collection of modern and contemporary Chinese art, tracing the development of oil painting, ink and print from the twentieth century onward. A perennial highlight is an animated, moving version of a famous ancient handscroll depicting city life. The enormous exhibition floors allow room for large-scale installations and touring shows.
