The Longhua Pagoda rises within the grounds of the Longhua Temple in the south of Shanghai, an octagonal brick-and-timber tower whose form dates to the tenth century, rebuilt several times over the centuries. About 40 metres tall across seven storeys, its upswept eaves hung with bells make it one of the oldest and best-known pagodas in the city. Though visitors cannot climb the fragile interior, the pagoda anchors the temple complex, the largest and most complete ancient monastery in Shanghai, especially busy at the spring temple fair.
