Asunción's principal municipal theatre opened in the early twentieth century as the city's main stage for opera, concerts and drama. Its restrained facade fronts an ornate auditorium with tiered seating and decorative plasterwork typical of the period. After years of decline the building was restored to recover its historic appearance and acoustics. Located in the central district, it continues to host performances and remains a landmark of Paraguayan cultural life and a rare survivor of the capital's Belle Époque architecture.
