One of the most important independent theatres in Latin America, El Galpón was founded in the late 1940s as a cooperative committed to socially engaged drama. Forced into exile during the years of dictatorship, the company continued abroad before returning to its Montevideo home. Its theatre complex on Avenida 18 de Julio stages a broad repertoire and remains a cornerstone of Uruguayan stage culture. The institution is celebrated for its collective model and its long history of political and artistic resilience.
