The seat of Uruguay's General Assembly is a monumental neoclassical palace inaugurated in 1925 for the country's independence centenary. Built largely of native marble and granite, it is renowned for the Salón de los Pasos Perdidos, a vast hall paved with more than fifty varieties of Uruguayan stone. Sculpture, bronze doors and coffered ceilings adorn the interior, while the symmetrical facade dominates a broad plaza. Guided tours reveal the craftsmanship of a building conceived as a showcase of national resources.
