Built in 1989 for a summit of Central American presidents, this stepped plaza descends beside the National Museum in downtown San Jose. Its terraced concrete platforms open to views of the museum's yellow fortress and the mountains beyond. A statue of former president Jose Figueres Ferrer, who abolished the army, stands nearby. Craft stalls along one edge sell hammocks, textiles and souvenirs, and the plaza serves as a venue for concerts and public gatherings.
