This steel tower straddling an avenue in Zone 9 was raised in 1935 to honour reformist president Justo Rufino Barrios. Its lattice iron design deliberately echoes the Eiffel Tower, standing about 75 metres tall over one of the capital's main boulevards. A bell cast at the top is rung on national holidays, and the monument marks the entrance to a modern commercial district. Illuminated at night, it has become a recognisable landmark on the city skyline.
