Guatemala's national museum of modern art occupies a pavilion in the Aurora cultural complex of Zone 13. Named for the pioneering abstract painter Carlos Merida, it gathers twentieth-century Guatemalan painting, sculpture and graphic art. The collection charts the country's artistic currents from indigenous-inspired modernism to later avant-garde movements. Rotating exhibitions supplement the permanent holdings, and the museum sits within walking distance of the archaeology and natural-history museums of the capital.
