Saint Boniface Cathedral stands in the historic French-speaking quarter of Winnipeg, a Roman Catholic basilica whose successive churches have anchored the community since the 1810s. After a fire in 1968 gutted a grand stone cathedral, a modern church was built within the surviving ruined façade, leaving a striking open-air stone frontage. The adjoining cemetery holds the grave of Métis leader Louis Riel. The dramatic combination of ruin and modern sanctuary makes the site one of the most evocative landmarks in the city.
