The Diefenbunker is a vast underground bunker outside Ottawa, built in the early 1960s to shelter key government and military leaders in the event of nuclear war. Buried beneath a farm field, its four storeys of blast-proof corridors held communications rooms, a bank vault for the nation's gold, and quarters for hundreds of officials. Decommissioned after the Cold War, it now operates as Canada's Cold War museum. Guided tours lead visitors through the labyrinth of steel blast doors and period equipment.
