Standing at Sidist Kilo Square, this obelisk-topped monument commemorates the thousands of Ethiopians massacred by Italian occupation forces in February 1937 following an assassination attempt on the colonial viceroy. Bronze relief panels around the base depict scenes of the atrocity and mourning. Erected after liberation, the memorial gives its name, meaning the twelfth of Yekatit in the Ethiopian calendar, to the surrounding square. It remains a focal point for remembrance of the victims of fascist rule.
