Located near the Mercato district, Anwar Mosque is the largest mosque in Addis Ababa and a central place of worship for the capital's Muslim community. Built during the Italian occupation of the 1930s, its whitewashed walls and slender minarets rise above the surrounding market streets. The mosque fills to overflowing during Friday prayers and major Islamic festivals, when worshippers spill into the adjoining squares. It stands as a reminder of Ethiopia's long and deeply rooted Islamic heritage alongside its Christian traditions.
