Considered the oldest surviving building in Dar es Salaam, this coral-stone structure near the harbour was erected in the mid-nineteenth century under the Sultanate of Zanzibar and later used by German administrators. Its carved Zanzibari doorway and thick masonry walls reflect Swahili coastal architecture. The building has been restored as a heritage centre. Standing among the seafront's historic institutions, it embodies the layered history of the city from Omani rule through the colonial period into the modern era.
