This bronze statue at a central roundabout in Dar es Salaam depicts an African soldier, an askari, and commemorates the African troops and carriers who served in the First World War in East Africa. Cast in the 1920s, it replaced an earlier German colonial monument on the same spot, reflecting the city's shift from German to British rule. The figure faces the nearby harbour with rifle and bayonet. The busy intersection around it remains a key orientation point in the commercial heart of the city.
