The country's principal museum, set in landscaped gardens in central Dar es Salaam, presents Tanzania's archaeology, history and culture, including casts of early hominid fossils from the famed Olduvai excavations. Galleries cover the coastal Swahili civilisation, the German and British colonial periods and the struggle for independence, alongside vintage vehicles. Founded in the early twentieth century, it has grown into a national institution. Its central location and shaded grounds make it a convenient cultural stop.
