Facing the Avenue Habib Bourguiba in the modern quarter of Tunis, this Roman Catholic cathedral is a landmark of the colonial-era new town. Completed in the late nineteenth century, it mixes Byzantine, Gothic and Moorish elements in a pale stone facade flanked by twin towers. Its position at the head of the city's grand boulevard, opposite a statue of the medieval scholar Ibn Khaldun, makes it a focal point of the downtown streetscape. Still serving the capital's Christian community, it stands as a reminder of Tunis's cosmopolitan past.
