The Hammouda Pacha Mosque lies within the medina of Tunis, built in the early seventeenth century during the Ottoman-influenced Muradid period. It is one of the city's finest examples of a mosque with an octagonal minaret, a form associated with the Hanafi rite introduced by the Ottomans, contrasting with the older square Maliki minarets. The prayer hall and adjoining mausoleum are decorated with imported marble, carved stucco and Italian-influenced ornament. It reflects the layered religious traditions of Tunis.
