The Dar el-Makhzen of Fes is the royal palace of the city, a sprawling walled complex covering many hectares at the edge of Fes el-Jdid, the district founded by the Marinids in the thirteenth century. While its gardens and pavilions lie closed to the public, its ceremonial gateway on Place des Alaouites is one of the most photographed sights in Fes. Seven great brass doors set within horseshoe arches gleam against a backdrop of intricate zellij and carved cedar. The gate exemplifies the peak of Moroccan craftsmanship.
