This range of limestone hills rises along the eastern edge of Cairo and has supplied building stone for the city and its pyramids since antiquity. Its heights offer some of the broadest panoramas over the sprawling metropolis, the Nile and the Citadel below. The slopes hold the cave churches of the Coptic community, a domed monastery and viewpoints popular at sunset. Long associated with legends and quarrying, the escarpment provides a natural balcony from which the immense scale of the modern city becomes clear.
