This large agricultural estate on the western side of Ankara was established in the 1920s at the direction of the republic's founder as a model farm to demonstrate modern methods and to green the arid capital. Spread over a vast area, it includes farmland, dairies, a brewery, woodlands and a zoo, along with a faithful reconstruction of the house where the national leader was born in Thessaloniki. Long a place of public recreation, it embodies early republican ideals of self-sufficiency, and portions remain protected as green legacy.
