The principal history and archaeology museum of the country, on Rustaveli Avenue and part of the wider Georgian National Museum network. Its collections span prehistoric artefacts, ancient Colchian and Iberian material and a celebrated treasury of gold and silver goldsmithing. A basement gallery documents the Soviet occupation of Georgia with photographs, documents and personal testimonies. The museum's holdings trace human presence in the Caucasus over hundreds of thousands of years, including some of the earliest hominin finds in the region.
