The principal thoroughfare of central Tbilisi, running from Freedom Square toward the Republic Square area and named after the medieval poet Shota Rustaveli. Laid out in the 19th century, it gathers many of the capital's landmark institutions, including the parliament building, the national opera house, academic theatres and grand hotels. Walking its length, visitors pass ornate facades mixing classical, Art Nouveau and Soviet styles, shaded by plane trees. The avenue has often been the stage for the country's demonstrations and gatherings.
