The principal museum of Tajikistan, occupying a large modern building near Rudaki Park in central Dushanbe. Its galleries span natural history, archaeology, fine art and the history of the Tajik people from ancient times to the present. Among its treasures is a large reclining Buddha figure recovered from a Buddhist monastery site, one of the largest such statues in the region. The museum gathers material from across the country's Silk Road and Sogdian past under one roof.
