Pura Maospahit is one of the oldest temples in Denpasar, believed to date in origin from around the fourteenth or fifteenth century when the Majapahit empire of Java extended its influence over Bali. Its ancient red-brick shrines and gateways, decorated with statues of mythological figures and guardians, reflect the East Javanese architectural style of that era rather than the coral-stone forms common elsewhere on the island. Damaged by earthquakes and rebuilt over the centuries, the temple survives amid the modern streets as a link to.
