The Suramadu Bridge is the longest bridge in Indonesia, spanning the strait between Surabaya on Java and the island of Madura for more than five kilometres. Opened in 2009 after years of construction, its central cable-stayed section is carried on tall pylons that have become a recognisable feature of the Surabaya skyline. The crossing dramatically shortened travel to Madura, which had previously depended on ferries, and spurred development on both shores. Illuminated at night, the bridge stands as a landmark of modern Indonesian engineering.
