The Palacio do Governo is the seat of government in Dili, a long colonnaded building of the Portuguese colonial era facing the seafront of the capital. Its arcaded facade, painted in pale tones, houses offices of the state and hosts official ceremonies. Fronting a broad waterfront promenade, it forms part of the historic administrative core of the city that survived successive periods of foreign rule. The building stands as a visible link between the country's colonial past and its status as an independent nation.
