Motael Church

Motael Church is regarded as the oldest Catholic church in Timor-Leste, its congregation tracing back to the Portuguese colonial era. The whitewashed building on the Dili seafront became a symbol of the independence movement after a young man was killed nearby, an event that helped galvanise international attention to the territory's plight. Restored and still in active use, it stands as both a place of worship and a landmark of the nation's recent history. Its coastal setting and simple facade make it a quiet focal point in the capital.
