This walled garden with an ornate arched gateway was originally a royal pleasure garden of the Nawabs of Awadh before becoming the scene of fierce fighting during the 1857 uprising. Today the restored enclosure houses a botanical research institute, its lawns and beds set behind the decorative stucco entrance. A memorial recalls the soldiers who died storming the walls. The blend of a graceful Awadhi garden pavilion with a sombre historical association makes it a quietly compelling stop in the city.
