A monumental hotel on Yuanshan hill whose sweeping red-columned facade and golden roof make it one of the most recognisable buildings in Taipei. Completed in its present palace form in 1973, it was conceived as a showpiece of classical Chinese architecture to host visiting heads of state. Fourteen storeys of vermilion and dragon motifs rise above the Keelung River, and legend surrounds the tunnels beneath the podium. Its lobby, grand staircase, and hilltop setting draw sightseers even those not staying the night.
