Taiwan's first museum devoted to modern and contemporary art, opened in 1983 in a cantilevered white building whose stacked, tube-like galleries evoke traditional Chinese joinery. Set beside the Zhongshan riverside park, it stages the influential Taipei Biennial and rotating exhibitions of local and international artists. Its collection traces the development of Taiwanese modernism, ink painting, and avant-garde work. The airy central atrium and sunken sculpture court give the interior an open, light-filled character.
