The Former Hokkaido Government Office is a stately red-brick building in central Sapporo, completed in 1888 in an American neo-baroque style during the drive to develop the northern frontier. Locally nicknamed the red-brick office, its octagonal dome, symmetrical wings, and formal front garden with ponds make it one of the city's best-loved landmarks. It served as the seat of the island's administration for decades before becoming a museum and archive. The grounds, planted with lotus and ringed by trees, are a popular strolling spot.
