Mitaki-dera is a wooded mountain temple on the outskirts of Hiroshima, named for the three waterfalls that tumble through its grounds. Reached by a path winding up a forested valley, it feels remote despite its closeness to the city center, with moss-covered stone lanterns, small statues, and a vermilion pagoda glimpsed among the trees. In autumn the maples turn brilliant red, making it one of the finest foliage spots in the area. Water drawn from one of its falls is used each August in the peace ceremony held at the memorial park downtown.
