Shukkeien is a historic strolling garden in central Hiroshima, laid out in the early seventeenth century for a feudal lord and named for the way it compresses varied scenery into a compact space. A central pond dotted with islets is ringed by a winding path leading past miniature hills, valleys, tea houses, and an arched bridge. Devastated by the atomic bombing in 1945, when survivors sought refuge here, the garden was painstakingly restored and reopened years later. Today it offers a serene retreat that changes character with each season.
