The Hiroshima Museum of Art, opened in 1978 near the central park, is best known for a strong collection of French Impressionist and modern European painting, with works by masters of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Its circular main gallery, evoking the dome of the Atomic Bomb Dome nearby, was conceived partly as a prayer for peace. Alongside the European holdings it displays modern Japanese Western-style painting. Set amid greenery in the heart of the city, it offers a quiet cultural counterpoint to Hiroshima's memorial sites.
