Founded by an insurance company in a skyscraper and later moved to a purpose-built tower nearby, this museum is best known for holding one of the few paintings of a famous sunflower series by a celebrated Dutch post-impressionist, acquired at a record price in the late 1980s. Alongside this centerpiece it collects modern Japanese and Western art and stages special exhibitions in its high-rise galleries in the Shinjuku business district. The single masterpiece draws art lovers from around the world to an otherwise modest collection.
