Yoyogi Park is one of central Tokyo's largest green spaces, on land beside the Meiji Shrine that once served as a military parade ground and later Allied housing. Reopened as a public park in 1967 after hosting Olympic facilities, it offers broad lawns, wooded paths, a cycling course and ponds with fountains. On weekends it fills with picnickers, musicians and performers, and its ginkgo and cherry trees mark the seasons. Adjoining the fashionable Harajuku district, it is a lively meeting ground for Tokyo's subcultures.
